iOS5 is out for our ‘friends’ – should we tell them?

Well looky here... where have I heard some of this before?

So, despite some issues for some that install iOS5, it’s out. Now, is it really ‘cutting edge’? Let’s look at what they now have [and feel free to pat the head of an iOS user and say "good for you"].

i'm using the list of updates from CNET's coverage - and remember, this is just my opinion]

  • Siri – Google Voice Actions; tho’ not as extensive as Siri, but it’s been out for over a year (with the Froyo release) – and really nobody uses it that often – it’s just novelty, not innovation.

  • Find my Friends – Latitude, something we’ve had since day 1

  • Notifications – hrmm… VERY android indeed. This has also been a ‘since day 1′ feature. Who’s copying who now?

  • Newsstand – well, I can say I don’t care about this, but I’m sure there are other newspaper apps out there. Diminishes the opportunity for media companies to develop their own apps and must bend to the will of Apple.

  • Twitter from camera – umm… isn’t that what the ‘share button’ is for?

  • Safari Reader mode – that’s kinda cool, but how often do you really run into it? At least we have flash so we don’t have to worry about pages not working.

  • Reminders – gTasks [okay, it's not an official Google app, but it's a google service]

  • Camera upgrade – okay, something here; mine is slow [but I don't care about my camera]

  • Mail improvements – there’s plenty of great email apps out there, and Gmail definitely needs an update; however, many of the features they show, we’ve already got.

  • iCloud – ok? They’re acting like they just invented cloud programs. Docs has been around for some time. So has Dropbox, Sugarsync etc… they’re just starting to catch up. I relish listening to all the people who scream when they say “oh no, I’ve lost my phone and all my contacts, please re-send”.

  • Game Centre – Tegra Zone is pretty fun, albeit for Tegra devices only. But what difference is that versus the actual marketplace and filtering games?

  • iMessage – I seriously SERIOUSLY don’t get BBM or this new iMessage? Why can’t we just text or gTalk, or MSN, etc…? Why do I need a proprietary IM program for only a select few of my friends. That’s why i use eBuddy – captures all of them

  • Cards - seriously? really…? a new innovation is something that sends postcards? *facepalm* We’re going to rock it like it’s 1909!

  • Personal dictionary – any keyboard does that in Android, I want to say as early as Donut.
